Dutch winger Ryan Babel was seriously linked with a move to Premier League giants Liverpool in the summer. The Reds were said to have made a £14m bid for the player on July 10, 2007. Two days later, it was reported that present club Ajax Amsterdam and Liverpool had agreed an £11.5m deal for Babel. Liverpool confirmed the deal in the following day as it was revealed that the player will put pen to paper on a five-year deal.

Ryan Babel was unveiled as a new Liverpool player alongside Israeli player Yossi Benayoun on July 13, 2007 following his big money transfer from Dutch football giants Ajax Amsterdam. His first game for the Reds came four days frok his unveiling in a friendly game with German team Werder Bremen.

Babel was given the number 19 shirt at Liverpool and he made his Premier League debut on the opening weekend of the 2007/08 season. He came off the bench in the away game at Aston Villa for his first taste of Premier League football. One week down the line, Anfield had the opportunity to see Ryan Babel for the first time as he came on as a substitute against rivals Chelsea.

Liverpool fans witnessed Ryan Babel as he scored his first goal for the club against Derby County on September 1, 2007. His first goal in the colours of Liverpool in the Champions League came against Besiktason November 6, 2007 having come on as a substitute. Babel scored twice during that Champions League meeting with Beskitas and he could have had a treble if not for the crossbar. He was also on target with the fourth and final Liverpool goal in the must-win Champions League group stage game against French team Marseille after coming on as a substitute.

Babel had a relatively successful first season in English football. In total, he scored 12 goals in 91 league outings until he left the club for German team TSG Hoffenheim in 2011.
