Koeman delighted to have Van Dijk as the Netherlands captain

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has said that he is delighted to have Virgil van Dijk as the country’s captain. The centre-back was handed with the permanent captaincy last year and he has since impressed for club and country and helped Liverpool win the Champions League title last season.

Speaking in a press conference, Koeman said that Virgil van Dijk has a great personality and he is proud to have him as the leader of the team, he told: “He has a great personality and also one of the reasons he is the captain. He is an example for the team and an example for the nation. We are really proud to have him as a captain in the national team.

Ronald Koeman Aiming To Spur The Netherlands To Euro 2020

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman is hoping to use the win over Portugal as a template to qualify for the European Championship in 2020. The Dutch have suffered a double setback, having failed to make the proper for Euro 2016 as well as the 2018 World Cup, but Koeman believes the future is bright for the upcoming set of players.

The Oranje played with a 5-3-2 formation during the international friendly against Portugal last night, and this worked into their favour as they frustrated the European champions before hitting them on the counter-attack on three occasions in the first period. The Dutch could have scored more than three goals on the night, but Koeman was satisfied with the positive result.

Ronald Koeman Urges Justin Kluivert To Reject Manchester United

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has urged Justin Kluivert to continue his development at Ajax rather than pursue a big-club move during the summer. The 18-year-old is reportedly attracting interest from Manchester United, but Koeman believes the teenager is better off staying with his current club. Speaking in a pre-match press conference, he said: “I spoke to him about this,’ admitted Koeman. He’s in talks with Ajax about his contract. I think the best is for him stay in Holland because he’s only 18.”


Kluivert had a personal chat with manager Jose Mourinho following Ajax’s 2-0 defeat to United in the Europa League final, and he has since continued to be linked with the Red Devils. Despite this, United appear unlikely to make a transfer approach this summer with Mourinho highlighting that the club are focused on bolstering other areas of the pitch other than the attack.
